Many of these recently relocated swarms of bees do quite well in the warm Texas environment of Bexar County due to the large amount of water and lakes and sunshine. So, you are probably asking are these killer bees. But, they seem very aggressive. Did you spray them? The answer more times than not is NO. But we have seen them in San Antonio specifically Bexar county more than any place in the state. We work to identify these populations with the Texas A&M department of entomology to determine the number of bee hives carrying the gene for the aggressive behavior. Little known fact is that Africanized bees are not an accident. They were made in a lab in Brazil and have migrated through Mexico to Texas. Due to the warmer winters Hybridized Africanized bee swarms are more common in San Antonio with multiple wild bee related deaths recorded each year. Killer bee worker bee and queen bees are indistinguishable from their calmer cousins in shape and honey production in all but one way they tend to swarm more frequently and are highly aggressive. Africanized wild bees are highly aggressive driven by queen bees which carry a specific gene for aggression which protect bees and can only be determined by a bee lab usually a university department of entomology. Killer bees kill many DIYers and would be pest control exterminators each year. A special bee suit is required to avoid bee stings from these types of bees as they target the most vital of areas as the eyes and soft tissues of the face and can track and follow for up to half a mile. Aggressive honey bees that are hybridized with Africanized honey bees have been known to kill pets and large animals defending their bee colonies. If you are in a situation with aggressive wild bee or native bees near your home and they are attacking the best option is to cover sensitive areas of your body from stinging insects with your hands such as the face and immediately flee the situation. Bee hives that are aggressive will send worker bee attackers to target the closest animal or person resulting swarms of bees and potentially a deadly bee attack. It is best to leave the rid of bees especially of Africanized bee infestation and bee hive removal to professionals that have removed these types of bees and are experienced beekeepers.
Honey Bee Rescue strongly recommends to not attempt the removal of any species of bees honey bee swarms or bees nests yourself. Sprays and internet found treatments rarely work and bees sting! without a bee suit aggressive honey bees such as ground nesting bees will lead to more bee stings and complicated honey bee removals.
